Ibiza Sports: Extreme Running

What do you do on a bitterly cold February Sunday morning when the wind's blowing a gale and your bed is the warmest place on the island? Why, you put on some flimsy fancy dress and put yourself through hell running up and down a freezing beach in the annual San Antonio Extreme Running competition.

Hundreds of people turned up to compete a circuit of obstacles - tyres, tunnels, bales of hay and icey cold culvert water - on Arenal Beach. The route was long enough over the flat - from the 'Egg' end of the beach all the way up to Sa Punta Des Moli - but got even worse with a detour along the two culverts which feed excess rainwater into the sea.

It may look like a tough assault course, but it was nothing compared to the Outlet Stock Sale going on in the marquee at the same time where a chaotic discount retail frenzy was in progress with bargains galore to be had. We have deferred publishing any photos of this in case anyone of a sensitive nature is reading!
