Ibiza Uncovered: Es Cavallet

Ibiza's largest nudist beach, Es Cavallet, lies within the natural park area of Las Salinas and is therefore a Mecca for naturists (those who go naked) and naturalists (those who stride about in baggy explorer trousers a la Attenborough)

According to the information boards on the beach, naturalists will enjoy a plethora of flora and fauna, and naturists should check before they sit down as hedgehogs are amongst the wild life scuttling about here!

One feature of the beach that is unusual in Ibiza is the sand dunes – the vast majority of other Ibiza beaches don't have them. Currently there's a project of preservation and regeneration of the dunes under way and visitors will see hundreds of metres of cane fences used in this process.

The dunes also provide great shelter from the breeze and this makes sunbathing possible even in the winter months when the sun's shining though when our photos were taken last week the crystal clear waters – though inviting – were a little cold.

The furthest end of the beach from the car park tends to be used by gay men who even have their own bar/restaurant 'Chiringay' amongst the dunes. The Chiringuito Es Cavallet is handily placed close to the car park and just beyond more 'formal' dining can be had at La Escolera restaurant.

The far end of the beach marks Ibiza's most southerly point and the location of the Ses Portes watchtower which can easily be seen from the sand dunes.

Es Cavallet can be reached on the number 11 bus from Ibiza town and our tip for car drivers is to leave the beach a little early as 'rush hour' at around 19.00 causes long delays.
